The Church of the Dead Gods
During the wars that followed the loss of magic, people gathered in the now-useless temples; not for magical healing, but for shelter and community. Groups formed to share resources, provide non-magical care for the sick and hungry, and support one another through the crisis. These gatherings became the foundation of what is now the Church of the Dead Gods.
The Church is the continent's most widespread cultural and humanitarian institution, with the goal to provide aid to those without access to food and medicine. Most common people attend their local temple regularly. Some attend to worship and pay respect, some to just get help they otherwise couldn't, and others just because that's what you did.
The Church operates under the direction of the Wizards, but generally has free rein in their humanitarian mission. Only when the Church has inched toward political ideology have the Wizards intervened.
Most Church clergy sincerely believe what they preach, inheriting a long tradition they have no reason to question. In their minds, the Gods deserve reverence for their heroic sacrifice, and they feel honored to provide help to the people that the Gods can no longer.
However, not all are satisfied with these traditions. A small reformist faction within the Church has begun noticing inconsistencies: old faded documents that only mention the abrupt silence of magic vanishing, with no mention of sacrifice or death of the Gods. They have no answers yet, only troubling questions. They carefully research and quietly share what they find among themselves, trying not to gain too much unwanted attention from the Church and Wizards.
