Wizards
After magic disappeared from the world, the land was in chaos. Being the only remaining group with access to magic, Wizards were a powerful force in the resulting wars, being able to mow down enemies with spells like Fireball and create quick defenses with Wall of Stone. Their magical power led them to seizing political power.
The most powerful Wizard at the time was crowned King, with a trusted second in command at his side. They set up residence at the arms of the mountain Ungetum, founding what would become the capital city of Belauern. Wide roads were built to connect it to every corner of the continent, and the Wizard King's tower rises high above the surrounding area to see every Lord's land from its top.
The Wizards devised a system where local Lords who swore fealty could continue to have authority over their lands, so long as a High Wizard was stationed in their court. This arrangement was presented as assistance, but the balance of power is rarely in question.
A Wizards College was built in the Capital as a great institution of learning, politics, and carefully guarded knowledge. It is seen as a great honor to be accepted to the Wizards College, and quite the disappointment to wash out. Those who complete their training are assigned as apprentices across the kingdom, serving their High Wizard and the Lord alike, advancing through the ranks via careful skill and political favor.
Those who attempted the study but found it beyond their reach could still serve society as Cantripers, sanctioned by local Wizards to cast a single cantrip for the public good.
The Wizard King governs from the tall tower in the Capital, managing all of the affairs of the kingdom. Those in the tower oversee the flow of raw spell components as they are taxed from the Lords' lands, processed, and distributed either to the Wizards College or to the High Wizards across the continent. The second in command also oversees the Wizards College, guiding both its teachings and politics with a careful hand.
The College is home to vast research projects and tomes of accumulated knowledge. Access to its deeper archives is restricted. The Wizards are generous with their magic and how it can help society, but are less forthcoming about the knowledge they posses and why things are the way they are.
