About The Setting
Map of the Continent - Klippe
A Medieval Day
Lords govern their lands from stone castles, knights fight battles, and peasants work the fields.
Feuds between noble houses aren't uncommon, though the Wizard King's authority keeps open war at bay.
7 noble houses are spread across the continent, with the capital city of Belauern nestled in the arms of the mountain Ungetum, bustling with wizards and clergy.
House Kastner
Lord Stefan Kastner
Lady Abigail Kastner
Nikolas Kastner
Leopold Kastner
Gabriella Kastner
Known for being long running and stable, the Kastners are one of the main noble houses in the continent.
Lord Stefan Kastner has governed with a steady hand for nearly two decades, navigating the feuds and frictions of the world with characteristic patience.
The entire family is well loved by the locals, and rumors of a marriage alliance for Nikolas Kastner are bringing an excited buzz to the entire town.
Magic
Although magic does improve the daily life of all, it does not flow as it once did. Only Wizard Magic remains, accessible exclusively to those who rigorously study the methods and components that make it work.
Sorcerers, Paladins, Clerics, Bards, and Warlocks are all things of legend, their kind not seen for generations. The reasons for the disappearance of this magic depends on who you ask.
The lack of Divine Magic and healing spells cuts deep, affecting every walk of life regardless of class or power.
Factions
Wizards
Being the only magic class, Wizards are key members of society. Even though their numbers are relatively small, they hold significant political authority across the continent. A Wizard is placed at every Lord's castle, serving as the kingdom's representative in that territory. This arrangement is presented as assistance, but the balance of power is rarely in question.
The study of magic is among the most demanding pursuits a person can undertake. Years of rigorous training, precise memorization, and deep understanding of the arcane wash out all but the most capable and determined students.
Those who attempt to study magic but find it beyond their reach can still contribute to society through the sanctioned role of a Cantriper: public workers licensed by the local Wizard to memorize the components of a single cantrip (such as Prestidigitation) and put their limited magic to use cleaning the streets, providing light, putting out fires, or assisting farmers.
Lords
Leaders granted authority over their lands by the King, but are expected to accept counsel from the assigned Wizard in their land. They also must pay taxes to the crown in the form of raw materials used for spell components.
Lords govern their people, enact justice, defend their borders, and ensure the productivity of the land (farms, mills, mines, and trade routes). Marriages and alliances between houses are common tools of diplomacy used to strengthen influence and secure peace.
Outright war with neighboring Lords is uncommon, but subtler subterfuge is always present: turning a blind eye to bandits in rival lands, overcharging for goods because of a personal grievance, carefully arranging rumors for the right moment, etc.
Church of the Dead Gods
Continent-wide church that preaches that the Gods heroically sacrificed themselves to protect the world from a great evil, the details of which the histories no longer fully describe. They teach that this sacrifice explains the loss of divine magic in the world.
The Church operates from old temples that dot the land, offering humanitarian aid, food, and care to those in need. For most common people, their local temple is the first place they turn to in hard times. Whether or not they believe the Church's teachings, they show up.
Most clergy preach with genuine sincerity. Though a small number have a hard time ignoring the holes in the historical records, and notice that the story doesn't quite add up.
The Abandoned
Vocal dissidents who reject the Church's central teaching. They claim the Gods did not die, but have abandoned the world to fend for itself. The lack of healing magic alone has caused immeasurable suffering of commoners and noble alike.
The Abandoned believe the Church and the ruling class are actively suppressing information, and that the ordinary people deserve to know the truth. Their methods range from street preaching to more drastic and dangerous measures. Most dismiss them as conspiracy theorists, though not all.
